The Big Picture
My name is Katelynn Anstey but most know me as Katelynn Wheeler. I've been at LBCC since fall of 2024 and will graduate this spring. LBCC fits into the big picture because it's a stepping stone into getting a Bachelor's degree from OSU. I enrolled into this News Reporting course because I believe it can help me in whatever job I take after school. I am currently a Communications major and have a love for news, writing, marketing, and people in general. I want to be able to tell a story that grabs the readers attention and know how to get all of the facts. I'm most interested in learning how to run an interview. I know how to ask questions but want to work on listening more intently and being able to improvise.
Outside of college, I like to do a little of everything. In the Summer, I like to hike and take day trips to the coast. In the winter, you can find me at home with my son, playing, cooking, or doing a puzzle. If it's not raining, my son - who is 2.5 years - and I enjoy a walk outside when there's still daylight. My biggest goal for the term is to get a story published in The Commuter. It's to have a story worthy of The Commuter. A story that is beneficial to the reader and the community. My next goal is to be able to conduct an interview that answers every single one of my questions. Interviews can be nerve racking before going in so my hope is to gain the confidence and be ready for any kind of interview.
My last goal is to be able to pick stories that matter. Maybe every story matters and it's just a matter of how you deliver it. I'm here to make sure that every story I deliver makes it worthy of mattering to anyone who reads it. I guess that would mean that my last goal is to write a story that gives the reader goosebumps.
My first news story is going to be about the Periwinkle Child Development Center. I just want to explain what services are available, who it's available to and how it came to be on campus. I've already conducted my videos and have also decided that I want to show how much the teachers care about the kids that attend and that it's a worthy choice of child care and learning for student parents.
My three sources are Kendra Votava - Director of Periwinkle, Dana Westbrook - Site Coordinator, and Elisha - Lead Teacher. Five questions I asked were, How is Periwinkle funded? How do you measure success for children's development? What qualifications and/or training is required? How would you explain the Emergent Constructivist Curriculum Model of teaching? and What are your goals for the next five years? Other questions I had were answered through the website and will be included in my report!
